HOW TO

STEP 1: ADOPT

When adopting a dog it is best to do your research. It can come down to the type of breed whether they are hypoallergenic, size, etc. The most common service dogs are Golden Retrievers or Labradors. Before making the choice, make sure to interact with them to get a gauge of their personality, behavior, and temperament. "While dogs can become therapy animals at any age, it is much easier to train dogs if you adopt them as puppies. That said, older dogs can be just as loving and obedient as the younger ones.” (US Service Animals, 2020) Any dog is qualified into becoming a service dog.

STEP 2: TRANING

After adopting the dog, immediately train them. The sooner the better. There are different ways to train your dog. Some owners choose to self-train or get a professional to train their dogs. (US Service Animals, 2020) Training your dog is a crucial step to teach them obedience. Consistency is the key. Make sure the dog is getting positive reinforcement like treats or pets.

STEP 3: REGISTER

Lastly, registering your dog. US Service Animal provides certification online. They need documentation of the animal. With registering, your animal can be an emotional support animal or a service animal. Finally, your animal is officially registered.
